Redeveloping Exchange Square

Success Stories
Creating a vibrant area that benefits people and nature.

In January 2022 British Land, the owner of Broadgate, opened its new 1.5-acre Exchange Square after the redevelopment. Once completed, the park quadrupled the amount of green space at Broadgate, located in the City of London.

The redevelopment project aimed to boost the emotional and physical wellbeing of those who work at Broadgate and the local community by creating a vibrant multi-functional area that benefits both people and nature. It was fully consistent with British Land’s commitment to sustainability and biodiversity.

Greengage acted as the sustainability coordinators throughout the design and construction of the Exchange Square redevelopment works at Broadgate.

Exchange Square redevelopment sustainability highlights:

  • 61% reduction in embodied carbon was achieved as a result of changing from granite to limestone paving
  • Decorative stone from the water feature was sent to the British Library
  • Demolition waste was used on site as concrete within tree pits
  • 600% biodiversity net gain
  • 26% of the area is green space, a significant increase compared to the previous public realm design

The renewed Exchange Square includes 420 square metres of lawned areas, an exciting mix of planting and trees within its gardens, an amphitheatre with plenty of seating, and new retail and event space. If you haven’t visited Exchange Square yet, consider spending half an hour there during lunch or after work to enjoy green space in the heart of the City of London.

Committed to a greener, decarbonised campus by 2030.

Greener Spaces

We integrate carbon intelligent decision making into the design and operation of the whole campus.

From low carbon buildings to nature friendly landscaping. We start with how we design and construct our new buildings, and how we refit and repurpose our existing ones. Then we use smart tech to make our buildings as efficient as possible, and make sure no waste goes to landfill.

And it’s an ongoing journey. We’re always looking for new ways to progress further – and we seek to work in partnership with our customers, suppliers and partners to help them do the same.
